How doth the citysitsolitary, that was fullof people! how is she become as a widow! she that was greatamong the nations, and princessamong the provinces, how is she become tributary!
She weepethsorein the night, and her tears are on her cheeks: among all her loversshe hath none to comfort her : all her friendshave dealt treacherouslywith her, they are become her enemies.
Judahis gone into captivitybecause of affliction, and because of greatservitude: she dwellethamong the heathen, she findethno rest: all her persecutorsovertookher between the straits.
The waysof Ziondo mourn, because none cometo the solemn feasts: all her gatesare desolate: her priestssigh, her virginsare afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
Her adversariesare the chief, her enemiesprosper; for the LORDhath afflictedher for the multitudeof her transgressions: her childrenare goneinto captivitybeforethe enemy.
And from the daughterof Zionall her beautyis departed: her princesare become like harts that findno pasture, and they are gonewithout strengthbeforethe pursuer.
Jerusalemrememberedin the daysof her afflictionand of her miseriesall her pleasant thingsthat she had in the daysof old, when her peoplefellinto the handof the enemy, and none did helpher: the adversariessaw her, and did mockat her sabbaths.
Jerusalemhath grievouslysinned; therefore she is removed: all that honouredher despiseher, because they have seenher nakedness: yea, she sigheth, and turnethbackward.
Her filthiness is in her skirts; she rememberethnot her last end; therefore she came downwonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, beholdmy affliction: for the enemyhath magnified himself .
The adversaryhath spread outhis handupon all her pleasant things: for she hath seen that the heathenenteredinto her sanctuary, whom thou didst command that they should not enterinto thy congregation.
All her peoplesigh, they seekbread; they have giventheir pleasant thingsfor meatto relievethe soul: see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become vile.
Is it nothing to you, all ye that passby? behold, and seeif there beany sorrowlike unto my sorrow, which is doneunto me, wherewith the LORDhath afflicted me in the dayof his fierceanger.
From abovehath he sentfireinto my bones, and it prevailethagainst them: he hath spreada netfor my feet, he hath turnedme back: he hath mademe desolate and faintall the day.
The yokeof my transgressionsis boundby his hand: they are wreathed, and come upupon my neck: he hath made my strengthto fall, the Lordhath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not ableto rise up.
The Lordhath trodden under footall my mighty men in the midstof me: he hath calledan assemblyagainst me to crushmy young men: the Lordhath troddenthe virgin, the daughterof Judah, as in a winepress.
For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eyerunneth downwith water, because the comforterthat should relievemy soulis farfrom me: my childrenare desolate, because the enemyprevailed.
Zionspreadeth forthher hands, and there is none to comforther: the LORDhath commandedconcerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round abouthim: Jerusalemis as a menstruous woman among them.
The LORDis righteous; for I have rebelledagainst his commandment: hear, I pray you, all people, and beholdmy sorrow: my virginsand my young menare goneinto captivity.
I calledfor my lovers, but they deceivedme: my priestsand mine eldersgave up the ghostin the city, while they soughttheir meatto relievetheir souls.
Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my bowelsare troubled; mine heartis turnedwithinme; for I have grievouslyrebelled: abroadthe swordbereaveth, at home there is as death.
They have heardthat I sigh: there is none to comfortme: all mine enemieshave heardof my trouble; they are gladthat thou hast done it : thou wilt bringthe day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me.
Let all their wickednesscomebeforethee; and dounto them, as thou hast doneunto me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.
