1Listen to me, you islands; hear this, you distant nations: before I was born the Lord called me; from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.2He made my mouth like a sharpened sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me into a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver.3He said to me, ‘You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendour.’4But I said, ‘I have laboured in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing at all. Yet what is due to me is in the Lord’s hand, and my reward is with my God.’5And now the Lord says – he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am[1] honoured in the eyes of the Lord and my God has been my strength –6he says: ‘It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.’7This is what the Lord says – the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel – to him who was despised and abhorred by the nation, to the servant of rulers: ‘Kings will see you and stand up, princes will see and bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.’
Restoration of Israel
8This is what the Lord says: ‘In the time of my favour I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances,9to say to the captives, “Come out,” and to those in darkness, “Be free!” ‘They will feed beside the roads and find pasture on every barren hill.10They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water.11I will turn all my mountains into roads, and my highways will be raised up.12See, they will come from afar – some from the north, some from the west, some from the region of Aswan.[2]’13Shout for joy, you heavens; rejoice, you earth; burst into song, you mountains! For the Lord comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.14But Zion said, ‘The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.’15‘Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!16See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.17Your children hasten back, and those who laid you waste depart from you.18Lift up your eyes and look around; all your children gather and come to you. As surely as I live,’ declares the Lord, ‘you will wear them all as ornaments; you will put them on, like a bride.19‘Though you were ruined and made desolate and your land laid waste, now you will be too small for your people, and those who devoured you will be far away.20The children born during your bereavement will yet say in your hearing, “This place is too small for us; give us more space to live in.”21Then you will say in your heart, “Who bore me these? I was bereaved and barren; I was exiled and rejected. Who brought these up? I was left all alone, but these – where have they come from?” ’22This is what the Sovereign Lord says: ‘See, I will beckon to the nations, I will lift up my banner to the peoples; they will bring your sons in their arms and carry your daughters on their hips.23Kings will be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers. They will bow down before you with their faces to the ground; they will lick the dust at your feet. Then you will know that I am the Lord; those who hope in me will not be disappointed.’24Can plunder be taken from warriors, or captives be rescued from the fierce[3]?25But this is what the Lord says: ‘Yes, captives will be taken from warriors, and plunder retrieved from the fierce; I will contend with those who contend with you, and your children I will save.26I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh; they will be drunk on their own blood, as with wine. Then all mankind will know that I, the Lord, am your Saviour, your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.’
Isaiah 49
English Standard Version
The Servant of the Lord
1Listen to me, O coastlands, and give attention, you peoples from afar. The Lord called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name. (Isa 11:11; Isa 33:13; Isa 44:2)2He made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me away. (Isa 11:4; Isa 51:16; Ho 6:5; Heb 4:12; Re 1:16)3And he said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”[1] (Isa 44:23)4But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the Lord, and my recompense with my God.” (Isa 50:6; Isa 53:10; Isa 65:23)5And now the Lord says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him— for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord, and my God has become my strength— (Isa 49:1; Isa 50:4; Isa 52:13)6he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” (Ps 98:3; Isa 42:6; Ac 13:47)7Thus says the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation, the servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.” (Isa 48:17; Isa 49:1; Isa 49:23; Isa 50:6; Isa 53:3)
The Restoration of Israel
8Thus says the Lord: “In a time of favor I have answered you; in a day of salvation I have helped you; I will keep you and give you as a covenant to the people, to establish the land, to apportion the desolate heritages, (Ps 69:13; Isa 42:6; Isa 61:4; 2Co 6:2)9saying to the prisoners, ‘Come out,’ to those who are in darkness, ‘Appear.’ They shall feed along the ways; on all bare heights shall be their pasture; (Isa 41:18; Isa 42:7)10they shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them. (Isa 40:11; Re 7:16; Re 7:17)11And I will make all my mountains a road, and my highways shall be raised up. (Isa 40:4)12Behold, these shall come from afar, and behold, these from the north and from the west,[2] and these from the land of Syene.”[3] (Ps 107:3; Isa 43:5)13Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the Lord has comforted his people and will have compassion on his afflicted. (Isa 40:1; Isa 44:23)14But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” (Isa 40:27; Isa 54:6; Isa 62:4)15“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. (Ps 27:10; Isa 43:1)16Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me. (So 8:6; Re 13:16)17Your builders make haste;[4] your destroyers and those who laid you waste go out from you. (Zec 1:18)18Lift up your eyes around and see; they all gather, they come to you. As I live, declares the Lord, you shall put them all on as an ornament; you shall bind them on as a bride does. (Nu 14:21; Isa 60:4; Jer 43:12; Eze 5:11)19“Surely your waste and your desolate places and your devastated land— surely now you will be too narrow for your inhabitants, and those who swallowed you up will be far away. (Zec 10:10)20The children of your bereavement will yet say in your ears: ‘The place is too narrow for me; make room for me to dwell in.’ (Isa 49:19; Isa 54:1)21Then you will say in your heart: ‘Who has borne me these? I was bereaved and barren, exiled and put away, but who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; from where have these come?’” (Isa 49:20)22Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations, and raise my signal to the peoples; and they shall bring your sons in their arms,[5] and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders. (Isa 11:12; Isa 14:2)23Kings shall be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers. With their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you, and lick the dust of your feet. Then you will know that I am the Lord; those who wait for me shall not be put to shame.” (Ps 25:3; Ps 72:9; Isa 40:31; Isa 60:3; Isa 60:14; Isa 60:16; Joe 2:27; Mic 7:17)24Can the prey be taken from the mighty, or the captives of a tyrant[6] be rescued?25For thus says the Lord: “Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken, and the prey of the tyrant be rescued, for I will contend with those who contend with you, and I will save your children. (Mt 12:29; Lu 11:21)26I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. Then all flesh shall know that I am the Lord your Savior, and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.” (Ex 20:2; Isa 9:20; Isa 43:3; Zec 11:9; Re 14:20; Re 16:6)
