1The king of Ammon died. His son Hanun became the next king after him.2David thought, ‘I’m going to be kind to Hanun. His father Nahash was kind to me.’ So David sent messengers to Hanun. He wanted them to tell Hanun how sad he was that Hanun’s father had died. David’s messengers went to the land of Ammon.3The Ammonite commanders spoke to their master Hanun. They said, ‘David has sent messengers to tell you he is sad. They say he wants to honour your father. But the real reason they’ve come is to look the city over. They want to destroy it.’4So Hanun grabbed David’s messengers. He shaved off half of each man’s beard. He cut their clothes off just below the waist and left them half naked. Then he sent them away.5David was told about it. So he sent messengers to his men because they were filled with shame. King David said to them, ‘Stay at Jericho until your beards grow out again. Then come back here.’6The Ammonites realised that what they had done had made David very angry with them. So they hired 20,000 Aramean soldiers who were on foot. The soldiers came from Beth Rehob and Zobah. The Ammonites also hired the king of Maakah and 1,000 men. And they hired 12,000 men from Tob.7David heard about it. So he sent Joab out with the entire army of Israel’s fighting men.8The Ammonites marched out. They took up their battle positions at the entrance of their city gate. The Arameans of Zobah and Rehob gathered their troops together in the open country. So did the men of Tob and Maakah.9Joab saw that there were lines of soldiers in front of him and behind him. So he chose some of the best troops in Israel. He sent them to march out against the Arameans.10He put the rest of the men under the command of his brother Abishai. Joab sent them to march out against the Ammonites.11He said, ‘Suppose the Arameans are too strong for me. Then you must come and help me. But suppose the Ammonites are too strong for you. Then I’ll come and help you.12Be strong. Let’s be brave as we fight for our people and the cities of our God. The LORD will do what he thinks is best.’13Then Joab and the troops with him marched out to attack the Arameans. They ran away from him.14The Ammonites realised that the Arameans were running away. So they ran away from Abishai. They went inside the city. After Joab had fought against the Ammonites, he went back to Jerusalem.15The Arameans saw that they had been driven away by Israel. So they brought their troops together.16Hadadezer had some Arameans brought from east of the River Euphrates. They went to Helam under the command of Shobak. He was the commander of Hadadezer’s army.17David was told about it. So he gathered the whole army of Israel together. They went across the River Jordan to Helam. The Arameans lined up their soldiers to go to war against David. They began to fight against him.18But then they ran away from Israel. David killed 700 of their chariot riders. He killed 40,000 of their soldiers who were on foot. He also struck down Shobak, the commander of their army. Shobak died there.19All the kings who were under the rule of Hadadezer saw that Israel had won the battle over them. So they made a peace treaty with the Israelites. They were brought under Israel’s rule. After that, the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.

David Defeats Ammon and Syria
1After this the king of the Ammonites died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place. (1Ch 19:1)2And David said, “I will deal loyally[1] with Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father dealt loyally with me.” So David sent by his servants to console him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the Ammonites. (1Sa 11:1)3But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Has not David sent his servants to you to search the city and to spy it out and to overthrow it?”4So Hanun took David’s servants and shaved off half the beard of each and cut off their garments in the middle, at their hips, and sent them away. (Isa 20:4)5When it was told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.”6When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of Tob, 12,000 men. (Jos 13:11; Jos 13:13; Jud 11:3; Jud 11:5; Jud 18:28; 2Sa 8:3; 2Sa 8:5)7And when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men. (2Sa 23:8)8And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the gate, and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the open country. (2Sa 10:6)9When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Syrians.10The rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and he arrayed them against the Ammonites.11And he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.12Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him.” (De 31:6; 1Sa 3:18; 1Sa 4:9; 1Co 16:13)13So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him.14And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.15But when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together.16And Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the Euphrates.[2] They came to Helam, with Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head. (2Sa 8:3; 1Ch 19:16)17And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to Helam. The Syrians arrayed themselves against David and fought with him.18And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David killed of the Syrians the men of 700 chariots, and 40,000 horsemen, and wounded Shobach the commander of their army, so that he died there. (1Ch 19:18)19And when all the kings who were servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel and became subject to them. So the Syrians were afraid to save the Ammonites anymore. (2Sa 8:6)
